How to use your new Kaymed mattress

As a new mattress can be deeper, better built and higher lofted than a used/old mattress, it is important to allow up to 50 days to adjust to your new mattress. Body impressions or settlement can occur as surface comfort fillings compress under your weight but this does not diminish the support provided by your new mattress and is not a manufacturing defect. Follow our User Guide to ensure you enjoy this product and sustain its life.

1. Air your mattress – odour dissipation
Some people notice a slight synthetic odour to their new mattress. This is due to the freshness of the filling materials and is perfectly normal. The odour is harmless and will disappear after a short period of time, usually 3 or 4 days max. Remove the product from packaging, stand it on its side and air for 24 hours in a well-ventilated area before use. It is also a good idea to air the mattress regularly in use.

2. Rotate your mattress
Rotating your mattress from head to toe will help to even material settlement across the mattress surface. Rotate once monthly during the first 6 months and every 3 months thereafter.

3. Turn your mattress (for two-sided mattresses only)
Turn your mattress (flip it) once every 3 months to help filling materials settle evenly and reduce body impressions. This does not apply to one-sided “non-turn” models, which should be rotated only (see point 2).

Note that mattress handles are for positioning on the base only – they should not be used for flipping or rotating the mattress.

4. Break in your mattress
Just like breaking in a new pair of shoes it can take a little time to get used to the feel of your new bed as compared with your old bed. Please allow up to 50 days to adjust to the new level of comfort and support offered by your new bed – especially if it is a completely different specification to what you have been used to.

5. Keep your bedroom cool
Body heat during sleep is personal and mostly influenced by our individual metabolism and bedroom set up. Sleeping warm is not caused by a defect in the mattress and is not covered by manufacturers warranty. It is advised to de-tog, use natural bed linen and ensure the bedroom is well ventilated at night time.

6. Fit a mattress protector
Prevent moisture, odour and allergen or mite problems by using a mattress protector. A mattress protector helps to keep the mattress safe and in a hygienic condition which is a requirement of the warranty terms and conditions.

7. Do not misuse the mattress
Do not bend or fold the mattress either during installation or while in use. Do not allow children to jump on the mattress as this can damage components. It is not advisable to sit on the side of the mattress for long periods.

8. Clean your mattress
Remove surface dust and fluff with a soft brush rather than a vacuum cleaner. Remove spills quickly with a moist cloth using lukewarm water and soap or a mild detergent. Pat dry with paper towels and leave to dry in a well ventilated location.

9. Bed linen /sheets
Many of our mattresses are over 10” deep. Fit extra deep bed sheets, which are now widely available, as are deep-gusset mattress protectors. Alternatively use a flat sheet.

10. Electric Blankets
An electric blanket can be fitted with all our mattresses. However, using an electric blanket with our Memory Foam mattresses may diminish the body contouring properties of the Memory Foam and might cause you to overheat. In which case, it is suggested to remove the electric blanket.

11. Mattress feels different to the one tried in store
We manufacture every Kaymed mattress in a quality controlled process, this ensures that the model we make in the factory is identical in specification to the display model on the shop floor. The shop floor model may feel a little different due to heavy usage over a period of time. Allow up to 50 days to adapt to your new mattress and break it in fully. Be aware that firm and extra firm mattresses do soften up a little as time goes on.

12. Mattress measurement tolerances
As all of our mattresses are individually hand made rather than produced by machine the finished measurements can vary slightly – by plus or minus 1” appx (3cm) in either width or length.

MATTRESS WARRANTY

Your new mattress/bed set comes with a comprehensive 10-year warranty policy inclusive of a two-year manufacturing guarantee. On receipt of your new mattress, you can register your warranty online.

The NBF (National Bed Federation) recommends that beds be replaced between 8 and 10 years.

DIVAN BASES

A. Selecting the right base
It is vital to support your mattress on a new matching divan base or other suitable foundation, particularly with heavy mattresses. Unsuitable or old bases can compromise the support levels of the mattress. For slatted bedframes or bedsteads. Gaps between the slats should be no more than 3” (75mm) apart and there should be a central support for queen and king sizes. This will help to prevent mattress sag.

B. Fitting the castors
The castors (where applicable) should be fitted into the sockets located on the underside of the base and gently tapped home with a mallet or hammer turned sideways. The two halves of the base should be joined together with the connecting U clips or plastic inter-connectors.

C. Using Drawers
Drawers are a handy storage option and do not weaken the base in any way. However, do not overload the drawers. Use for suitable and light items like bedding, linen and clothing. Heavy objects may damage the drawers beyond repair.
